Raney Zusman Medical Group is one of the premier cardiovascular and thoracic surgery programs in Southern California, and maintains a reputation of unparalleled excellence in heart surgery and lung surgery. Dr. Aidan A. Raney and Dr. Douglas Zusman founded the group in 1987 to serve Hoag Memorial Hospital exclusively. The heart surgeons met while training at Stanford University, where they trained under the direction of Dr. Norman Shumway, the world renowned pioneer in heart transplantation. In 1990, a third highly skilled surgeon, Dr. Colin Joyo, joined the group to assist with the increased volume of cases.

The group went on to perform the first heart transplant in San Diego County and the first at Hoag Hospital. During 14 years of practice at Hoag Hospital, the doctors have remained committed to using cutting edge techniques, including mitral valve repair, minimally invasive heart surgery, robotic heart surgery, transmyocardial laser revascularization, and the Ross procedure.
