What is a Cardiac Surgeon?
A cardiac surgeon receives highly specialized training in surgery of the heart, as well as surgery of the lungs and thoracic (chest) cavity. Cardiac surgeons specialize in surgical treatment for disease of the blood supply to the heart (the coronary arteries), heart valves, cardiac transplantation, and the large arteries that branch off the heart (including the aorta). A cardiac surgeon also manages congenital heart disease, or problems with the heart that have been present since birth. Some of these problems may not show up until later in life and require surgical management.

Cardiac surgeons undergo extensive training to master their specialty. In addition to 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school, cardiac surgeons complete a 5 year residency in general surgery and a 3 year residency in cardiac surgery.
