Biography:
Since 1987, Dr. Aidan Raney and his partners have built one of the premiere cardiothoracic surgical programs in Southern California. After graduating with honors from University of Southern California School of Medicine, he served his internship and residencies in general and thoracic surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He trained in cardiac surgery under the world renowned Dr. Norman Shumway at Stanford University Medical Center. At Stanford, Dr. Raney was extensively involved in heart and lung transplant research, and served as the Chief Resident of the Cardiac Transplant Unit. He has has held various positions including Associate Clinical Professor, University of California, San Diego Medical Center, Co-Director, Cardiac Transplant Program Sharp Memorial Hospital, Co-Director Cardiac Transplant Program Hoag Memorial Hospital and Director of Cardiac Surgery at Hoag Memorial Hospital.  He is also the Surgical Director of the Heart Valve Center at Hoag Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Raney has been instrumental in introducing advanced surgical techniques and equipment to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, and is well known for his expertise in the areas of mitral valve reconstruction, aortic homograft valve replacement and the Ross procedure (replacing the patient's aortic valve with their own pulmonic valve). Along with Dr. Zusman, he established the cardiac transplant program at Hoag Hospital, and they brought laser technology for myocardial  revascularization.  Under his direction, Hoag was one of the first hospitals in Orange County to use minimally invasive video endoscopic vein harvesting for bypass surgery.  He introduced the Heartport "keyhole" bypass surgery technology, and has expertise in minimally invasive valve surgery. Dr. Raney also has considerable expertise in the surgical management of thoracic diseases, utilizing conventional and thoracoscopic techniques. His practice also consists of surgical intervention for patients with lung cancer being treated at Hoag Cancer Center.

As Director of Cardiac Surgery at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Dr. Raney has built a team of surgeons, nurses and technicians that have been consistently ranked #1 in overall heart program performance in Orange County and one of the top performers in California.  He also served on the Board of Directors at Hoag Memorial Hospital as elected physician representative. His professional associations include: Fellow American College of Surgeons, Fellow American College of Chest Physicians, Fellow American College of Cardiology, Western Thoracic Surgical Association and International Heart Transplant Society. He is a member of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.  He is a diplomat of the American Boards of General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery.


A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Raney and his wife Ann reside in Laguna Beach, California.
