What is a Heart Surgeon?
A heart surgeon receives highly specialized training in surgery of the heart, lungs, and thoracic (chest) cavity. A heart surgeon is also known as a cardiac surgeon. Heart surgery includes surgical treatment for disease of the blood supply to the heart (the coronary arteries), heart valves, cardiac transplantation, and the large arteries that branch off the heart (including the aorta). Lung surgery includes treatment for lung and chest wall cancer and lung transplantation. A cardiothoracic surgeon also manages congenital heart disease, or problems with the heart that have been present since birth. Some of these problems may not show up until later in life and require surgical management.
Heart Surgery Training
Heart surgeons undergo extensive training to master their specialty. In addition to 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school, heart surgeons will complete a 5 year residency in general surgery and a 3 year residency in cardiac surgery.
