Society of Thoracic Surgeons - 2006 Statistics
The following outcomes are from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database for cardiac surgery performed in 2006. Our heart surgeons are the exclusive heart surgery group for the Hoag Heart and Valve Institute, and all outcomes referring to Hoag Hospital describe the surgeons of Raney Zusman Medical Group.

Figure 1: Our surgeon's mortality rates are excellent compared to national risk-adjusted averages, and achieve a top 10% performance in all above categories.

Figure 2: Hoag hospital’s rates for preop beta blockers, anti-lipids and beta blockers on discharge achieve top 10% performance. Rates for antiplatelets on discharge and usage of the internal mammary artery during bypass are above STS averages, and above the 50th percentile.

Figure 3: Although the total number of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery for the group are low, there are only 3 heart surgeons performing coronary artery bypass surgery at Hoag Hospital, which means that our surgeons perform a large number of cases per surgeon. Hoag performed more valve and CABG procedures than the STS average, landing above the 80th percentile for both. Higher volumes are desired because they are related to better outcomes.

Figure 4: Hoag hospital’s rates on all outcome measures are better than the STS averages. Rates for deep sternal wound infections, renal failure, and stroke achieve top decile performance. Prolonged intubation is almost half of the STS average and achieves top quartile performance. Surgical re-exploration achieves 4th decile performance.
