In Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), the surgeon uses a blood vessel to bypass the diseased coronary artery. One commonly used vessel is the saphenous vein from the leg of the patient.
Traditional harvesting of the saphenous vein requires a long incision of the leg to extract the vein. In endoscopic vein harvesting, our surgeons create a small incision and use an endoscope to remove a portion of the saphenous vein. The endoscope consists of a very small light and camera and allows the surgeon to remove the saphenous vein without a long incision.
Endoscopic vein harvesting reflects the commitment of our surgeons to use minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever possible. This approach provides decreased healing time and complications from a long incision on the leg.
Endoscopic vein harvesting is not available for all patients, and depends on a variety of factors. These factors should be discussed in a consultation with a cardiac surgeon. You can schedule a consultation with one of the surgeons by calling (888) 565-8224.
